How I use AI to help me write daily newsletter and Threads post 10x faster

Threads have been talking about AI, ChatGPT lately.

I know I am late to the party.

But here is a quick sharing of how I use AI (ChatGPT) to simplify my writing process.

Just to say, I am still refining it, but it works so well, I can’t help but to share it.

Before we dive into the real tricks, one quick disclaimer:

I am not pro AI generated content.

I don’t think AI can, or should replace writing.

Because, writing is thinking.

Instead, we should use AI to do the tasks that we don’t like to do. So to make us write faster.

This is my take.

Let’s jump into it.

1 AI as an editor

ChatGPT can turn any first draft into certain writing layout/format, and rewrite it with different styles.

Simply speaking, this is what ChatGPT can do best.

Give it your first draft, and let it do the wonder.

However, to let AI edit well, you’ll have to do these 2 things:

  • Write some good prompts(Which I am not a master of, instead I just do it by trial and error.)
  • Feed some examples into it’s mouth

Here are 2 main things I feed my AI:

Writing format/formula

(e.g classic copywriting formula: BAB, Before - After - Bridge)

Some of my own writings, so AI can write and mimic my style.

(You can put your favorite writer’s text in as well, if you want to learn how to write like them)

2 AI as your friend

Whenever your brain get stuck, go talk to ChatGPT

Especially the audio chat function.

Turn your brain off, let your mouth just spill out whatever that is in your head.

ChatGPT is good at summarizing what you say, or keep asking questions.

Chat for 15 mins and you will have some idea of what to write next.

Or at least, you feel better.

3 AI as translator

This trick, I don’t think it’s gonna work for most people, but I am sharing it anyway.

Most of you may not know, that most of my newsletter/post, even this one you are reading now.

The first drafts are all in English.

Now, I know what you are thinking. But I can tell you this:

My English isn’t that good. I just type faster in English.

And since I believe the best way to write a first draft, is to type it away and never edit.

So I just use English.

And here is what interesting about ChatGPT.

It writes in English much much better than in Chinese.

So what I usually do is, write my first draft in english, let ChatGPT to do the editing I mentioned above.

After a few back and forth, when I am satisfied with it, I let ChatGPT to translate it into Chinese.

Then I do my final edit myself.

So my writing process without AI would be:

First draft in English, edit it, rewrite it, and do the final checking.

Now, I just type it away, send it to ChatGPT, and do my final checking.

I think on average, it saved me around 45-60 mins per one post/daily newsletter.

That’s a freaking lot.

And at the end, I will still have to say:

Never ever let AI replace thinking.

A rule I live by is:

The first draft must be written by myself.

And the final draft must have human touch in it.

Theoretically, you can “kind of” use the final trick, regardless of your English level.

You can first type in Chinese, ask it to translate it into english, edit in English, and translate back into Chinese.

I never tried it, but I think it will work just fine.

我自己怎麼用AI(主要是ChatGPT)來簡化寫作流程

先說在前頭:

我不鼓勵大家全都交給AI寫

我認為AI不能,也不應該取代寫作

因為,寫作是一種思考

不過,我覺得我們可以把「不想做但又不得不做」的部分交給AI

這樣就可以大幅加快寫作速度了

以下是我的做法:


1. 把AI當作小編

ChatGPT最擅長的事情之一

就是幫你把初稿,瞬間變成你想要的格式或風格

簡單講,就是:

你寫初稿,它幫你潤稿,套格式,改寫句子

但要讓ChatGPT潤得好,有兩件事很重要:

  • 給它清晰的prompt(我不是寫prompt高手,只能靠試錯慢慢來)
  • 餵它參考資料

我自己會餵它這兩種東西:

  • 寫作結構/公式例如:經典文案公式 BAB(Before-After-Bridge)
  • 寫作風格範例我會給它我自己的文章,讓AI學我的語氣(你也可以餵它你喜歡的作家的文章,讓它模仿)

2. 把AI當成聊天夥伴

腦袋當機,沒靈感的時候

我都會打開ChatGPT的語音聊天功能

請關掉您的腦袋,讓嘴巴開噴

腦中想到甚麼就講甚麼

(講話比較…呃…剽悍的話,可以躲到廁所裏聊)

ChatGPT會幫你總結

一直問你問題,讓你整理出頭緒來

講個10到15分鐘

就算還是沒有靈感,心情也會變好一點


3. 把AI當作翻譯

這招可能不太適合所有人

但我還是分享一下:

你可能不知道

其實我大部分電子報和貼文的初稿

都是用英文寫的(這篇也是)

我知道你可能會想:「哇你英文是不是超強?」

其實沒有,我英文也普通

但我打英文比中文快

只是我覺得

初稿就應該是趕快打出來,能不修就不修

所以用英文就比較快

而剛好,ChatGPT處理英文內容的能力遠比中文強

所以我就:

  • 英文寫初稿
  • 丟給ChatGPT編輯/改寫
  • 滿意之後,再讓ChatGPT翻譯成中文
  • 最後自己做一次簡單校稿

AI幫了我編輯初稿+改寫+翻譯

我手動做以上程序的話

大概一篇文要花個45到60分鐘

非常有感的…


最後我想再強調一次:

永遠不要讓AI,取代自己的思考

所以我給自己的原則是:

初稿一定要自己寫

定稿一定要加點人的「溫度」
